PELLSTON NEWS

Despite arriving in the “Ice Box of the Nation” during some of the chilliest weather this winter, a new recycling drop site in Pellston is receiving a warm welcome.

The Emmet County Recycling site was developed in cooperation with both the village of Pellston and the Pellston Public Schools.

The new site is located just north of Pellston Elementary School at the corner of Zipf and State streets.

Pellston High School Student Council members Jesse Kinner, Jake Burkhart and Maggie Mikus said the site is making recycling materials from the high school — which is a project of the student council — much easier. Mikus added it will make recycling much easier for her family, too, since they already drive to the schools regularly.

The site is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and includes bins for: Office paper, cardboard, newspaper and magazines, #1 & #2 plastic bottles, jugs and jars, glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel cans, foil and trays.

Materials from the site will be picked up by Emmet County Recycling and hauled to the drop-off center on Pleasantview Road. There they will be sorted and compacted before being shipped to factories in Michigan and the Midwest.

Jim Gillett, village president, said the village’s offices and maintenance garage recycle, an initiative championed by village clerk, Tonya Procknow.
